Every year, approximately 500,000 road accidents occur in the country. These accidents claim the lives of 1.8 lakh people. Many of those who die are those who die due to lack of medical treatment. If timely treatment is provided, hundreds of lives could be saved. One problem with treatment is money. Treatment requires a significant amount of money, and sometimes relatives are not available, and even if they are, they lack the necessary funds. The central government is coming up with a solution to these problems.

PM Modi to Launch Scheme

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon launch a cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims across the country. A pilot project is already underway, while PM Modi will soon formally launch the scheme.

Gadkari said, “This scheme is being implemented with the aim of reducing deaths caused by lack of timely medical assistance in road accidents.” Important issues like road safety, passenger convenience, ease of doing business and vehicle regulation were also discussed in this meeting.

What accidents will this scheme cover?

This scheme will apply to all road accidents involving motor vehicles on any category of road. Victims of any road accident involving a motor vehicle will be entitled to cashless treatment as per the scheme’s provisions. Cashless treatment is expected to facilitate timely treatment for road accident victims.

How much cashless treatment will be available?

On March 14, 2024, the Ministry of Road Transport launched a pilot project in Chandigarh to provide cashless treatment to road accident victims. The project was later expanded to six states.

Under the Ministry of Road Transport’s “Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims, 2025,” each victim will be provided cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh per accident for a maximum period of seven days from the date of the accident.

Treatment worth ₹73.88 lakh provided so far

Since the pilot project began in March 2024, approximately 20 percent of cashless treatment requests have been rejected. Gadkari stated in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that out of a total of 6,833 treatment requests, 5,480 victims were found eligible, while the remaining cases were rejected by the police. He also said that an amount of Rs 73,88,848 has been distributed so far under the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.
