There is great news offering significant relief to vehicle owners and driving license applicants in Delhi. Several Regional Transport Offices (RTOs)—which had been closed following the COVID-19 pandemic to promote digital services—are now being prepared for reopening. Under a restructuring plan, the Delhi Transport Department has decided to establish one RTO in every district of the city.

According to officials, a total of 13 RTO offices will be reactivated across Delhi, operating in accordance with the new district administrative structure. Currently, only four RTOs are fully operational. Once this new system is implemented, citizens will no longer have to travel to distant areas to complete their tasks, as these services will be made available at the local level.

Physical Facilities Alongside Digital Services

Over the past few years, the Transport Department had digitized approximately 90% of its services. These include processes such as obtaining a learner’s license, renewing a driving license, applying for a duplicate license, and vehicle transfers. However, there remain several services that necessitate physical verification or the submission of hard-copy documents. It is with this specific requirement in mind that the RTO offices are being reopened, aiming to provide citizens with enhanced convenience and accessibility.

Return of the DL-13 Series

Alongside this restructuring, a major change is also being introduced in vehicle registration. The DL-13 series, which had been discontinued for the past few years, will now be reintroduced in Delhi. Conversely, a decision has been taken to discontinue the DL-14 series, which is currently in use. Officials state that this move will help make the registration process more streamlined and user-friendly.

Where Will the New RTOs Be Opened?

New RTO offices will be established at Mall Road, Jam Nagar House, Lado Sarai, Hari Nagar, Loni, Sarai Kale Khan, Mayur Vihar, Wazirpur, Dwarka, Raja Garden, Rohini, Burari, and in other districts. All these offices will operate on a district-wise basis, thereby enabling residents to access services within their own localities.

When Will Services Commence?

The department has currently initiated preparations to launch all 13 RTOs. A timeline for their commencement will be released shortly, once the necessary infrastructure, staffing, and technical arrangements have been finalized.
