2000 Rupee Notes Update: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Monday that most of the 2,000 rupee notes have now returned to the banking system. According to the RBI, 98.42 percent of 2,000 rupee notes have been deposited or exchanged so far. This means that very few notes are still in the public’s possession. The RBI provided this information in an official statement. The central bank said that the withdrawal process has been largely successful and has seen good public participation.
The decision to withdraw the notes was taken in May 2023
The RBI announced the withdrawal of 2,000 rupee notes from circulation on May 19, 2023. At that time, the total value of 2,000 rupee notes in circulation in the country was ₹3.56 lakh crore. According to a report by news agency PTI, the Reserve Bank said that this amount has now reduced to just Rs 5,609 crore by January 31, 2026. This clearly shows that a large number of notes have returned to the banking system in the last two and a half years.
Deposit and exchange facilities were provided to the public.
When the RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes, the public was given the option to deposit them or exchange them for smaller denomination notes. This facility was available at all bank branches across the country until October 7, 2023. During this period, people were able to deposit their ₹2,000 notes or exchange them for other notes without any hassle.
Deposits are now available at RBI Issue Offices
From October 7, 2023, this facility is now available at 19 RBI Issue Offices. Those who still have ₹2,000 notes can deposit them into their bank accounts by visiting these offices. Additionally, the RBI has also allowed people to send their ₹2,000 notes to RBI Issue Offices through post offices. The amount is then deposited directly into their bank accounts.
₹2,000 Notes Still Valid
The Reserve Bank has clarified that ₹2,000 notes are still legal tender. This means that if anyone possesses these notes, they are not illegal and can be deposited. However, the RBI is advising people to deposit their remaining notes into the banking system as soon as possible to avoid future problems.
Overall, according to the RBI, the process of withdrawing 2,000 rupee notes is almost complete. Thanks to public cooperation, this initiative has been successful, and only a small amount of these notes remain in circulation. The Reserve Bank will continue to monitor this process.
