500 Rupee Note: Rumors are circulating on social media that the ₹500 note will be discontinued in March 2026. The government’s fact-checking agency, PIB, has dismissed these claims as false. PIB clarified that the ₹500 note is completely valid and will continue to be in circulation as before. People have been urged to ignore rumors and verify any news before sharing it.
500 Rupee Note: Will the 500 rupee note be discontinued from March 2026? Will ATMs stop dispensing 500 rupee notes? These rumors circulating on social media have people worried. But if you’re worried about this, there’s no demonetization of the 500 rupee note, nor are there any plans to remove it from circulation.
In fact, some posts and videos went viral on social media, claiming that 500 rupee notes will no longer be available at ATMs from March 2026 and that the government will gradually phase them out of circulation. These claims spread so rapidly that common people were confused. Consequently, the government had to come forward and clarify the situation.
PIB calls the claim fake, makes this appeal
The government’s official fact-checking agency, the Press Information Bureau (PIB), has declared these claims completely false. The PIB clearly stated that the 500 rupee note is completely legal tender and will continue to be in circulation across the country. In a post on the social media platform X, the PIB appealed to people not to believe rumors and to verify any news before forwarding it. In its statement, the PIB said, “Avoid misinformation. Before believing or sharing any claim, please verify it with an official government source.”

Why so much discussion about the ₹500 note?
The question now arises: why is there so much discussion about the ₹500 note? The main reason is that most ATMs in the country dispense ₹500 notes. This allows people to easily withdraw large sums of money at once. If the ₹500 note were discontinued, cash withdrawals could have become a major problem. Although some ATMs also dispense ₹100 and ₹200 notes, the ₹500 note is considered the backbone of the system.
The Minister of State for Finance clarified in the Rajya Sabha.
This isn’t the first time such a rumor has spread. In June 2025, a YouTube video claimed that the 500 rupee note would be discontinued in March 2026. The government flatly denied it at that time. Furthermore, in August 2025, Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, stated clearly in the Rajya Sabha that the government had no proposal to stop the supply of 500 rupee notes.
He also clarified that all three types of notes—100, 200, and 500 rupees—will remain available at ATMs. In short, the 500 rupee note is safe, and the news circulating on social media is merely a rumor.
