The central government has said that the talks regarding the 8th Pay Commission have intensified and a formal announcement can be made soon. That is, it is expected that the 8th Pay Commission will be implemented in the year 2026 itself. It will not be postponed till the year 2027. More than 1 crore employees and pensioners across the country will get its direct benefit.

Government’s preparation on the big demand of employees

In fact, last month a delegation of Government Employees National Confederation (GENC), an organization of government employees, met Union Minister Jitendra Singh. In this, the delay in the 8th Pay Commission and many important demands related to the employees were raised. The minister assured that the government is serious about the 8th Pay Commission and discussions are going on with the states. Soon the formal announcement of the commission and the formation of the panel will be announced.

What issues were discussed?

Not only the Pay Commission, but many important issues related to the employees were discussed in this meeting. There was also a discussion on the demand to re-implement the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The demand to abolish the National Pension Scheme (NPS) and Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) was also raised. The demand to release the DA arrears of 18 months stopped during the time of Corona was raised in this meeting. An appeal was also made to increase the compassionate appointment quota. Along with this, it was suggested to reduce the residency period for promotion. The issue of pay fixation and leave encashment of ex-servicemen was also raised. The need for changes in health facilities and leave rules was emphasized.

What was the response from the government?

Regarding the 8th Pay Commission, the minister assured that the commission would be constituted soon and the demands of the employees would be discussed. A meeting was held with the Secretary of the Pension Department regarding the restoration of OPS, so that a solution could be found. Regarding DA arrears, the government made it clear that this demand cannot be accepted right now. There will be no change in increasing the quota of compassionate appointments as it is related to legal provisions. There is no proposal right now on the demand to restore pension in 12 years instead of 15 years. Regarding the promotion rule, the government said that it will be placed before the 8th Pay Commission.

Why is the 8th Pay Commission important?

The income of government employees and pensioners is decided through the new Pay Commission every 10 years. Last time the 7th Pay Commission was implemented. Now the employees are expected to get big benefits in basic salary, allowances and pension from the 8th Pay Commission.
