8th Pay Commission: The biggest question among central government employees regarding the 8th Pay Commission is how much their salaries will increase and how much arrears they will receive. If 20 months’ arrears are paid, employees with a basic pay of less than ₹50,000 could receive arrears ranging from ₹3.6 lakh to approximately ₹1.5 lakh.
8th Pay Commission: The biggest question among central government employees regarding the 8th Pay Commission is how much their salaries will increase and how much arrears they will receive. According to recent reports in The Economic Times, if 20 months’ arrears are paid, employees with a basic pay of less than ₹50,000 could receive arrears ranging from ₹3.6 lakh to approximately ₹1.5 million. However, note that these figures are estimates; no official announcement has yet been made by the government.
How much arrears can be received at different levels?
If we consider employees from Level 1 to Level 8, there can be a significant difference in arrears. For example, Level 1 employees (₹18,000 basic salary) can receive arrears ranging from approximately ₹3.6 lakh to ₹5.65 lakh. Level 3 employees are expected to receive arrears ranging from ₹4.34 lakh to ₹6.81 lakh, Level 5 employees from ₹5.84 lakh to ₹9.16 lakh, and Level 8 employees (₹47,600 basic salary) are expected to receive arrears ranging from ₹9.52 lakh to approximately ₹14.94 lakh.
How was this calculation done?
This estimate is based on 20 months’ arrears and various fitment factors. The fitment factor is the main basis for determining salary increases. In the 7th Pay Commission, it was 2.57, while options ranging from 2.0 to 2.57 are being discussed for the 8th Pay Commission. Some employee organizations are also demanding an increase to 3.0 to 3.25.
When can arrears be paid?
It is believed that if the 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations are implemented, arrears can be paid from January 1, 2026, as the 7th Pay Commission’s term ended on December 31, 2025. However, its implementation may take some time, and the final decision will be taken by the government.
What are the demands of employee organizations?
Many employee organizations want the fitment factor to be increased to 3.0 or higher, which would result in a significant increase in employee salaries. There are also demands to increase the family unit from 3 to 5, which could further increase the basic salary. However, all these suggestions are currently under consideration.
Overall, if the current estimates of the 8th Pay Commission are implemented, employees with a basic salary of less than ₹50,000 could benefit significantly. They could see arrears of lakhs of rupees and a significant salary increase. However, we will have to wait for an official announcement.
(Disclaimer: These figures are only estimates. The government has not yet approved the 8th Pay Commission recommendations nor determined the fitment factor. Therefore, the final figures may differ from these.)
