Amid ongoing speculation about the 8th Pay Commission, the central government has provided a major and clear update in Parliament. This statement has turned the attention of millions of employees and retired pensioners to the Commission’s demands and potential pay increases.
8th Pay Commission: The long-awaited news for millions of central government employees and pensioners is now becoming clearer. The government has provided a major and important update in Parliament regarding the 8th Central Pay Commission. This indicates that the process of revising the salaries, allowances, and pensions of central government employees has formally moved forward.
The government clarified in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that the 8th Pay Commission has already been constituted. In a written response to a question from Rajya Sabha MP Javed Ali Khan, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that the government had notified the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission and its Terms of Reference on November 3, 2025. This means that the Commission is no longer confined to paperwork; it is now moving forward with its work.
Recommendations to be submitted within 18 months
The government also informed that the 8th Pay Commission will submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its formation. This means that central government employees and pensioners will have to wait a little longer. The Commission has been tasked with reviewing the pay structure, allowances, pensions, and all other related aspects of central government employees and making recommendations. Once the recommendations are implemented, changes in salaries and pensions are possible, affecting millions of families.
Government’s Stance Regarding Pensioners
Responding to questions regarding pensions, the government clarified that there will be no discrimination against pensioners based on their retirement date. The Minister of State for Finance stated that central government employees’ pensions are paid under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021, and other applicable regulations. He also stated that the Finance Act 2025 validates existing pension rules and makes no changes to civil or defense pensions.
Commission Becomes Active
Earlier, the government had also announced that an office for the 8th Pay Commission has been established. The process for new recruitments to staff the Commission’s work has also begun. These steps clearly indicate that the 8th Pay Commission is now moving towards full operation.
