Public Holidays 2025: Govt Offices, Banks, Schools Closed

Public Holidays & Local Closures: Sept-Nov 2025

If you’re planning ahead — for travel, work, or just getting stuff done — here are all the important public holidays coming up from September through November 2025. Not just national ones, but state/local too, because closures vary a lot.

🇮🇳 National / Gazetted Holidays

DateDayHoliday
2 October (Thursday)NationalGandhi Jayanti / Dussehra — Government offices and many banks closed everywhere.
20 October (Monday)NationalDiwali (Deepavali) — Big day. Offices, banks, schools mostly shut.
5 November (Wednesday)NationalGuru Nanak’s Birthday — observed widely across states, many state-level closures.

📅 State / Local / Region-Specific Holidays & Closures

These are important if you’re in particular states or cities. Check locally, but these are the known ones:

  • Mid-September 2025:

    • On 5-6 September, Id-e-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi) will lead to public / bank / school closures in states like Delhi, UP, Maharashtra, Karnataka and others.

    • In Kerala, Onam around 4-5 September is a holiday. Schools/offices closed.

    • Navratri / Durga Puja period — late September (e.g. 29-30 Sep etc.) — states in East India (West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand) will observe holidays. Schools especially.

  • 2 October (as above) — states may have extra local events tied to Dussehra in addition to the national holiday.

  • October:

    • Diwali (20 Oct) — widespread closings. In many states not just the main Diwali day but possibly surrounding days depending on local culture.

    • In Maharashtra (Mumbai region), Bali Pratipada / Balipadyami also falls on 22 October 2025 — local holiday.

  • 5 November — Guru Nanak’s Birthday. Banks, offices will be closed in states where it is observed. Punjab, Delhi, etc.

🔍 Tips to Stay One Step Ahead

  • Always check your state/local government website or notifications. Just because it’s not national doesn’t mean your city won’t close.

  • Banks often publish “state-wise holiday list” each month — useful if you need to visit a branch.

  • Schools follow both national and state holidays, but sometimes add local festivals or regional customs as extra holidays.

  • For business — deliveries, government services — avoid scheduling for days around big festivals (Diwali, etc.), because even if offices are open, support/transport might be sparse.
