Strict regulations against overloading have been implemented on national highways across the country starting April 15, under which a fine of up to four times the standard amount will be collected via FASTag for transporting goods exceeding the prescribed weight limit.
New Delhi: Effective today, if any truck, bus, or other vehicle is caught carrying a load exceeding the prescribed weight limit on any of the country’s national highways, new, revised penalty rules will be applicable. This new system has been implemented as of April 15. Under this framework, vehicles found to be overloaded will be subject to charges ranging from two to four times the standard rate.
Which Vehicles Are Exempt from Fines?
According to the Ministry, an official notification regarding this matter has already been issued. As per the regulations, specific weight-carrying limits have been established for all types of vehicles—including trucks and buses—stipulating the maximum load each specific vehicle type is permitted to transport. Under this provision, if a vehicle is caught carrying a load that exceeds the prescribed weight limit by no more than 10 percent while traveling on a national highway, no overloading charges will be levied against it.
Which Vehicles Are Subject to Double Charges?
However, vehicles carrying a load exceeding their permissible weight limit by 10% to 40% will be charged double the standard weight-based fee. Similarly, if a vehicle is caught carrying a load exceeding the prescribed limit by more than 40%, an overloading penalty four times the standard rate will be levied.
Overloading Charges Will Not Be Levied Without Weighing
Vehicles will be weighed at designated toll plazas located along the route. No overloading charge will be deducted from a vehicle without it first being weighed. Furthermore, overloading charges will not be accepted in cash; instead, payment must be made exclusively through FASTag. Vehicles that do not have a FASTag installed will be subject to the standard toll charges applicable to all vehicles utilizing national highways.
All Information to be Uploaded to the ‘Vahan’ Portal
The applicable charges will be collected accordingly. All details regarding overloaded vehicles will also be uploaded to the National Vehicle Register (Vahan). It is anticipated that this measure will lead to a reduction in the movement of overloaded vehicles on the roads, thereby further enhancing overall road safety.
