Every day, millions of people across the country travel by local and passenger trains. Now, to make their journeys faster, more comfortable, and safer, Indian Railways is embarking on a new era—one in which the millions of daily commuters will finally be liberated from the old, noisy, and slow local trains of the past. The Railways is currently gearing up to introduce the semi-high-speed ‘Vande Metro’ trains, which have the potential to completely transform the inter-city travel experience.
According to the Railway Board, the prototype for the Vande Metro has already been developed, and its commercial launch is now in its final stages. It is anticipated that the first batch of these trains will begin running on the tracks by June 2026. In the initial phase, these trains will be deployed on routes characterized by high daily passenger traffic—such as Delhi-Meerut, Lucknow-Kanpur, and Mumbai-Lonavala.
High Speed to Ensure Time Savings
The Vande Metro will boast a maximum speed of 130 to 160 km/h—significantly higher than that of standard local trains. This will save passengers between 25% and 30% of their travel time. In other words, daily commuting will now become far faster and more convenient than ever before.
A Journey Packed with Amenities
Passengers on these trains will enjoy a host of modern amenities. Features such as air-conditioned coaches, comfortable seating, mobile charging points, modern restrooms, and automatic doors will significantly enhance the travel experience. Capacity for Thousands of Passengers at Once
The Vande Metro has been specifically designed to accommodate a large volume of passengers. This 16-coach train offers seating for approximately 1,566 passengers, while its total capacity stands at 4,364 passengers. It will also provide ample space for passengers traveling while standing.
Fares and Production Plan
The minimum fare is expected to be around ₹30—slightly higher than that of local trains—yet it is considered economical given the amenities provided. The Railways aims to manufacture approximately 50 Vande Metro trains this year.
