Aadhaar card: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is promoting a new way that allows travelers to check in to hotels without carrying any physical identification. UIDAI recently shared a promotional video on the social media platform X regarding the Aadhaar app.

The video shows how this app allows people to digitally verify their identity. Released on March 6, 2026, the video depicts a situation in which a traveler arrives at a hotel only to discover she has forgotten her Aadhaar card at home.

In this case, she downloads the Aadhaar app and verifies her identity through biometric authentication. According to the demo, a QR code is generated within the app, which can be scanned at the hotel reception to instantly verify the guest’s identity.

How will hotel check-in be done using the Aadhaar app?

  • First, users must download the Aadhaar app from the Google Play Store onto their smartphone.
  • After installing the app, users enter their Aadhaar number and verify their identity through face verification using the phone’s camera.
  • Once verification is complete, the app generates a QR code. This QR code contains information related to the user’s verified identity.
  • The hotel receptionist scans this QR code, and the system immediately verifies the identity. Check-in can then be completed without providing any physical documents.
  • The demo also demonstrates that data sharing is secure and only essential information is shared digitally. This can also reduce the need to provide photocopies of identity cards.
  • The UIDAI says this can speed up and simplify the hotel registration process.

Follow these steps to start Aadhaar-based hotel check-in.

  • First, download the Aadhaar app from the Google Play Store on your smartphone.
  • Open the app and enter your Aadhaar number.
  • Verify your identity through face authentication using your phone’s camera.
  • Once the verification is complete, generate an Aadhaar QR code in the app.
  • Show this QR code to the hotel reception for scanning.
  • After scanning and verifying the QR code, the hotel check-in process will be completed digitally.
