UIDAI has made the process of updating Aadhaar very simple. Now you can update the name online from home. There is no need to stand in line at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra for this. You can complete this process with just a few documents and internet connection. Know about the step-by-step process, necessary documents and rules:

Documents required to change name in Aadhaar Card

To change the name, you have to upload a supporting document. This document should be valid by UIDAI. For this, passport, voter ID card, PAN card, ration card, gazette notification (for name change), bank passbook/statement (with photo).

Step-by-step online process to change name in Aadhaar Card

Step 1: Visit the official website of UIDAI (https://uidai.gov.in). Go to the “My Aadhaar” section and select the Update Aadhaar Online option.

Step 2: Login using your Aadhaar Number and OTP. Click on the “Name Update” option. Enter the new name and upload the correct supporting documents.

Step 3: Double-check all the details and click on “Submit”. Your request will be submitted and you will receive a URN (Update Request Number). You can track your update status using this URN.

How much time does the process of changing name in Aadhaar take?

According to UIDAI, name update request can usually take 7 to 10 days to be completed. Sometimes the time may increase in verification. You will get an SMS alert after the update is completed.

Things to keep in mind

A user can update the name online only twice. Enter the new name as it is written in your supporting documents. The scanned copy of the document should be clear and legible. After the name update, the new Aadhaar card can be downloaded.
