There’s news of great relief for millions of children across the country. Children between the ages of 7 and 15 will no longer have to pay any fee for updating their Aadhaar card’s biometrics.
New Delhi. Millions of children across the country have received some welcome news. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, has completely waived the fee for biometric updates (MBU-1) in Aadhaar cards for children aged 7 to 15 years. This facility will be effective from October 1, 2025, and will remain free for one year. This decision is expected to benefit approximately 60 million children.
Easy Access to Schools and Scholarships
This move by UIDAI will make it easier for children to access government services such as school admissions, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes. Previously, these biometric updates cost ₹125, but now the process is completely free. This facility applies to updates made between the ages of 5-7 and 15-17. According to the ministry, biometrics are not taken for children before the age of 5 because fingerprints and irises are not fully developed at this age. However, as soon as a child turns 5, they must undergo their first biometric update (MBU-1), and the second (MBU-2) is mandatory at age 15.
Important Advice for Parents
UIDAI has urged parents and guardians to update their children’s biometrics as soon as possible to avoid disruptions in future educational or government processes. This update ensures accurate identification of children and facilitates future use of Aadhaar-based services. This free update is available for a limited time—until October 1, 2026. After that, if the biometric update is not completed, the standard fee of ₹125 will be charged.
Financial Savings for Families
This government move is considered a major step towards strengthening children’s digital identity rights. This decision by UIDAI will not only save families financially but also make it much easier for children to access education, scholarships, and government schemes. This is another important initiative towards Digital India, ensuring a secure and secure future for children.
