New Delhi. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) of Ahmedabad has been temporarily closed with immediate effect after Air India flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday. There were a total of 242 people on board the plane that crashed. These included 230 passengers and 12 crew members. 30 people have died in this accident. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is also among those killed.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) spokesperson said, “Air India flight AI 171, which departed from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed outside the airport shortly after takeoff. Due to this, all flight operations at SVPIA have been temporarily suspended. There will be no flight operations till further notice.”

The spokesperson has appealed to the passengers to contact the airline to confirm the status of their flight. He said, “All passengers are requested to contact their respective airlines before coming to the airport to get information about their flights. At this time, the administration is busy dealing with this emergency. We appeal for your cooperation and patience. As soon as we get any new information, we will share it.”

DGCA said – we are taking necessary steps

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, “Air India’s plane VT-ANB, which was going from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed soon after takeoff. Investigation into the accident has been started and all necessary steps are being taken.” According to the data released by Air India, the passengers on board the plane included 169 Indian citizens, 53 British, 7 Portuguese and 1 Canadian citizen.

Tata Group Chairman expressed condolences

Tata Group Chairman and Air India Chief N. Chandrasekaran has expressed deep sorrow over the accident. He said, “I confirm with deep pain that Air India Flight 171 has met with a terrible accident today. Our condolences are with all the affected families. At present, our priority is to cooperate in relief operations and provide all possible help to the families of the passengers.”
