Air India said in its statement that the decision to discontinue Delhi-Washington flights was taken due to several operational reasons.
Air India has announced the closure of its flights from Delhi to Washington DC. The company issued a statement on Monday saying that it is suspending its flights from Delhi to Washington DC from September 1. Air India said in its statement that this decision has been taken due to several operational reasons. The decision to suspend Air India’s Delhi-Washington DC flights has been taken soon after the airline started retrofitting its Boeing fleet. Let us tell you that the airline started retrofitting its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month.
Decision taken due to shortage of aircraft
In a press release, the airline said that the decision to stop its flights from Delhi to Washington DC is mainly due to the shortage of its fleet, as it started retrofitting its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month. The airline said, “This comprehensive retrofit program is needed to improve the customer experience. Due to this, many aircraft will not be able to serve till the end of 2026. Air India also cited the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, which has lengthened the route of flights and increased operational challenges for its long-haul services.
What should those who have already booked tickets do?
Air India has said that it will contact passengers who have booked on the Delhi-Washington route after September. They will be provided with alternative travel options including rebooking on other flights or full refund depending on their choice. Despite the suspension, Air India customers will be able to fly to Washington, D.C. via one-stop connections via New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago and San Francisco.
