Air travel is getting expensive as the festive season begins. Around Diwali, the ticket prices of domestic flights have increased by 50% to 94% on many major routes. The biggest reason for this is the huge demand of passengers and there is no supply to match it. Data from airline booking portals show that ticket prices have suddenly increased two days before October 19.
The biggest impact has been seen on busy routes like Mumbai–New Delhi, Delhi–Kolkata and Kolkata–Bengaluru. For example, the fare of Mumbai–New Delhi has now reached Rs 9,500, whereas last year the same fare was Rs 5,762. That is, an increase of about 65%. Similarly, the fare from Delhi to Kolkata has increased from Rs 5,200 to Rs 9,350, which is 80% more.
Change in fares between Diwali 2024 and 2025 on major routes
Delhi–Kolkata: Rs 5,200 – Rs 9,350 (80% hike)
Bengaluru–Kolkata: Rs 6,320 – Rs 9,495 (50% hike)
Mumbai–New Delhi: Rs 5,762 – Rs 9,500 (65% hike)
Hyderabad–New Delhi: Rs 6,350 – Rs 7,645 (20% hike)
Chennai–Kolkata: Rs 5,600 – Rs 7,800 (40% hike)
Mumbai–Jaipur: Rs 6,458 – Rs 10,500 (63% hike)
Mumbai–Dehradun: Rs 7,200 – Rs 14,000 (94% hike)
This clearly shows that ticket prices are skyrocketing everywhere, from big metros to smaller cities. The increasing number of passengers has affected not only the metro routes but also local flights. The fare from Mumbai to Jaipur has increased by 63% to Rs 10,500, while the fare from Mumbai to Dehradun has doubled to Rs 14,000.
At present, the airlines have not announced any extra flights. Experts believe that if airlines start new flights during the Diwali season, there may be some relief in fares. But given the current situation, passengers will have to loosen their pockets for their Diwali travel.
