Airport Closed: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be closed for a full six hours on November 20, 2025. The airport administration shared this information through an official statement and Xpost. According to the official information, the airport will be completely non-operational from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on November 20. No flights will take off or land during this period. This closure is part of the airport’s annual maintenance, which is conducted every year after the monsoon.

Why is post-monsoon maintenance necessary?

Every year, after the monsoon, a detailed inspection of the runway’s condition, drainage system, lighting system, surface strength, and other technical aspects is carried out. According to airport operator MIAL, this maintenance is essential to global aviation standards to ensure the runway remains safe, reliable, and ready for high-stress operations. This necessitates a brief suspension of operations for a few hours.

Both runways will remain closed

Mumbai Airport has two intersecting runways—the main runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32. Both runways handle approximately 950 flights daily, making it the second-busiest airport in the country. Both runways will be non-operational simultaneously on November 20th, so flights will be rescheduled in advance.

NOTAM ISSUED

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has already been issued for this closure so that airlines can plan their flights and staff in a timely manner. Due to the NOTAM, airlines have adjusted their schedules to minimize disruption to passengers. NOTAMs are typically issued to inform pilots and staff involved in flight operations of any temporary changes in advance.

What will be included in the maintenance?

This annual inspection includes runway surface repairs, drainage system inspections, inspections of runway markings and lighting systems, technical evaluations, and safety testing. The airport also stated that these technical procedures are intended to ensure a safe and smooth journey for passengers.

What should passengers do?

Passengers flying to or landing in Mumbai on November 20th are advised to check the latest flight schedule with their airline. Most flights will be shifted either ahead of schedule or after the six-hour delay. If you are traveling on this day, regularly monitor messages and updates from the airline.
