Airport New Guideline: Air travel has become the most popular means of fast, safe and convenient transport in today’s time. However, some rules and regulations are implemented very strictly during air travel for security reasons. In the airport security check, passengers’ luggage is scanned and checked so that no dangerous or prohibited item can go into the plane.

Many times, due to lack of information, passengers’ luggage is stopped or confiscated at the airport. In this article, we will know in detail which items are prohibited to carry in the flight, so that you do not get into any trouble during the next travel.

1. Sharp Objects

It is strictly prohibited to carry any object on the plane that can cause injury to any passenger or crew member.

  • Knife
  • Scissors
  • Razor Blades
  • Nail cutter (some airlines instruct to keep nail cutters in check-in bags)
  • Tools like screwdriver, hammer

Note: Small nail cutters and safety razors may sometimes be allowed in check-in luggage, but are prohibited in hand bags.

2. Flammable & Explosives

Carrying any kind of flammable substance or explosive in the aircraft is prohibited at both international and national level. It is extremely dangerous for the safety of the aircraft and passengers.

  • Petrol, diesel, kerosene
  • Gas cylinders (LPG, CNG)
  • Fireworks
  • Paint thinner and turpentine

Matches and lighters (in some cases 1 small lighter is allowed to be carried personally, but not in hand bag)

3. Liquids, Gels & Aerosols

As per international security rules, the quantity of liquids that can be carried on flights is limited.

No liquid exceeding 100 ml can be carried in a hand bag.

All liquids, gels and aerosols have to be packed in a transparent plastic pouch.

The total quantity should not exceed 1 litre.

Examples:

  • Water bottle (can be purchased after security check)
  • Perfume
  • Shampoo, lotion
  • Deodorant spray
  • Liquid makeup products

4. Weapons & Ammunition

It is prohibited to carry any type of weapon, whether real or fake, on the plane.

  • Pistols, Rifles
  • Air Guns, BB Guns
  • Bows and Arrows
  • Toy Guns
  • Bullets, Cartridges

If a passenger is carrying a weapon with government permission and special approval of the airline, it can only be packed in check-in baggage, and it is mandatory to declare it at the airport.

5. Dangerous Chemicals

Some chemicals are toxic, flammable or corrosive which can pose a threat to the aircraft.

  • Acid
  • Bleaching powder
  • Mercury
  • Pesticide spray
  • Radioactive substances

6. Rules related to batteries and electronic devices

Batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, pose a risk of fire, so special rules have been made for them.

Spare lithium-ion batteries can only be carried in hand bags, not in check-in luggage.

Power banks are prohibited in check-in bags.

Some larger batteries also have a limit on capacity (Wh).

Examples:

  • Camera batteries
  • Drone batteries
  • Laptop batteries

7. Sports Equipment

Some sports equipment cannot be carried in hand bags for security reasons as they can be used as weapons.

  • Cricket bat
  • Hockey stick
  • Golf club
  • Baseball bat
  • Bow and arrow

These items can only be carried in check-in baggage.

8. Food rules

Most cooked and packaged food items can be carried on flights, but some items are restricted, especially for international travel.

  • Foods with strong odours (such as stinky fruits – durian)
  • Fresh meat, fish, dairy products (banned in some countries)
  • Liquids or pickles in large containers

9. Animals and birds

  • Live animals and birds can be carried only with special permission of the airline and as per the rules for pets.
  • Plants, seeds and soil are prohibited in many countries as it may spread pests or diseases.

10. Medical Equipment & Medicines

  • Some medical equipment such as oxygen cylinders can be carried on flights only after special permission.
  • Liquid medicines more than 100ml should be carried only with a doctor’s prescription.
  • Items like injections, syringes are also mandatory to be reported during security check.

11. Drones and remote control devices

  • Permission from the airline and DGCA is required to carry drones on a flight.
  • Keeping remote control toys and devices in hand bags is prohibited.

Things to keep in mind before traveling

Check the airline website: Every airline has its own rules, read them before traveling.

Buy water after security check: Do not carry liquid bottles before security check.

Carry documents: If a particular item is allowed, show its certificate.

Add a nominee: This is helpful for facilities like banking, but not necessary at the airport.

Check the rules of the destination country in case of international travel: The list of prohibited items may vary in different countries.

Following safety rules during flight travel is essential not only for your safety but also for the safety of all passengers. Attempting to carry prohibited items on the plane may not only result in your luggage being confiscated but you may also face fines or legal action.

So, before traveling, ensure that your hand bag and check-in baggage do not contain any prohibited items. With the right information and preparation, your air travel will be safe, smooth and stress-free.
