Delhi IGI Airport: If you’re planning to travel through Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in the coming days, there’s an important update for you. The airport’s third runway has been closed from February 25th to May 25th, 2026. This runway, known as 11R/29L, is undergoing repairs, maintenance, and upgrades, according to airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Therefore, flights will not be able to land or take off from the airport for the next three months.

This closure comes at a time when the peak summer travel season is about to begin, during which passenger numbers increase rapidly. However, airport operator DIAL has clarified that flight operations will not be significantly affected despite the runway closure. Flight operations will continue as scheduled. According to reports, an average of approximately 1,520 flights operate daily at Delhi Airport. Even during the runway closure, the airport plans to maintain its designated capacity of approximately 1,514 flight movements per day to avoid significant inconvenience to passengers.

Last time, 200 flights were affected daily.

  • Delhi’s IGI Airport is considered the busiest airport in the country. It has four runways: 27/9, 28/10, 29R/11L, and 11R/29L.
  • Last year, when runway 28/10 was closed for repairs, approximately 200 flights were affected daily. This time, airport management is preparing in advance to avoid a similar situation.
  • The primary reason for the runway closure is its rehabilitation, which includes resurfacing and the construction of a new rapid-exit taxiway.
  • In addition, the latest Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be installed on the runway, allowing flights to operate safely even in bad weather or low visibility.
  • Long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights may require dedicated runways for take-off, so efforts will be made to accommodate their demand.

Tower Supervisor Given Special Responsibility

According to airport sources, the Tower Supervisor has been assigned the responsibility to ensure strict compliance with the runway closure instructions. Furthermore, all agencies, including all airlines, have been informed of the closure in advance. Airport officials say this temporary inconvenience is a necessary step to ensure a better and safer flight experience for passengers in the future.
