Ayushman Bharat: Now treatment coverage up to 10 lakh rupees is available! Know which families will be able to avail the benefit

Amid rising medical costs and expensive treatments, news has emerged that offers significant relief. The central government’s flagship scheme, Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), has become even stronger.

Amidst rising medical costs and expensive healthcare in India, the government’s flagship scheme, Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), has emerged as a major relief. However, this scheme has now received an upgrade that doubles the coverage for millions of families. Previously, PM-JAY provided health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family, but now many families will be able to receive treatment coverage of up to ₹10 lakh. Significantly, this benefit will only be available to families who meet a key condition.

What is Ayushman Bharat?

Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY is the central government’s flagship health insurance scheme, aimed at protecting poor and vulnerable families from the cost of expensive and critical treatments. Under this scheme, families receive cashless health cover of ₹5 lakh per year, applicable at thousands of empanelled hospitals across the country. This scheme covers treatment for all serious, secondary, and tertiary diseases, and all pre-existing diseases are covered from the outset.

Who is covered?

The family coverage under this plan is quite broad. It includes spouses, children (including newborns), parents, grandparents, siblings, in-laws, and other dependents living with the family. This means there is no limit on the number of family members, nor are there any restrictions on age or gender.

Extra Top-Up for Senior Citizens 70+

The government made a major change last year. Each member over the age of 70 will receive an additional ₹5 lakh health cover. This means that if a family is already covered under PM-JAY and a member is 70+, they will receive an additional ₹5 lakh top-up. This brings the total health cover for such a family to ₹10 lakh.

What are the requirements for the 70+ top-up?

The individual must be 70 years of age or older.

Age proof will be obtained through the Aadhaar card.

Eligible individuals will only need to re-do their Aadhaar eKYC.

What other benefits are available to senior citizens?

No age limit, meaning full benefits even at 80 years of age or older.

Free annual health check-up

Coverage for secondary to advanced tertiary care, such as surgery, specialist treatment, organ transplant, etc.
