Who was Srimanta Shankardev?
Srimanta Shankardev is considered to be a great saint and social reformer of Assam. He was also a poet, playwright, musician, and artist. Disappearance date is celebrated in his memory after his death. Banks are closed in Assam on this day. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has included this occasion in the list of holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
On which days will banks remain closed this week?
- On 25 August 2025, banks will remain closed in Assam on the occasion of Disappearance Tithi of Srimanta Sankardev.
- On 27 August 2025, banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Belapur, Mumbai and Nagpur in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Chennai, Hyderabad, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh for Ganesh Chaturthi, Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrat, Ganesh Puja and Vinayaka Chaturthi.
- On 28 August 2025, banks will remain closed in Bhubaneswar and Panaji (Goa) on account of the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi and the festival of Nuakhai.
- On 31 August 2025, being a Sunday, all banks across the country will remain closed.
