Bank Holiday: The Reserve Bank of India has canceled the Mahavir Jayanti holiday. In most states, banks are closed on Mahavir Jayanti. However, this time, that won’t be the case. Mahavir Jayanti falls on March 31st. The RBI has canceled the Mahavir Jayanti holiday. Banks will now remain open nationwide on March 31st.

Why was the holiday canceled?

The government wants all government transactions related to the financial year 2025–26 to be completed on time. March 31st is the last day of the financial year. Therefore, the government requested that banks associated with government work remain open on this day. Following this, the RBI has directed all agency banks that handle government business will remain open on March 31st, 2026.

Which states previously had a holiday?

According to the RBI’s annual holiday calendar, the states where banks were to be closed on March 31, 2026, due to Mahavir Jayanti included Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. Now, banks will remain open in these states as well.

Significance of Mahavir Jayanti

Mahavir Jayanti is a major festival in Jainism. It is also known as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak. It is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Mahavir, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism. Many states observe a public holiday on this day.
