Bank holiday today: Often, we rush to the bank to complete our work only to find the bank shutters closed. Similar confusion may arise today, Thursday, February 19, 2026. The reason is a special regional holiday. So, if you’re planning to visit a bank branch, read this news first.

Where are banks closed on February 19?

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official holiday calendar, banks will be closed on February 19, 2026, not nationwide. This day has been declared a public holiday in the state on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. Therefore, all bank branches in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Nagpur, and Belapur, will be closed. Therefore, if you live in Maharashtra, it’s best to postpone your bank work to another day. Banks in the rest of the country will remain open as usual.

Why is February 19th special?

Every year on February 19th, the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout Maharashtra. He was born in Pune in 1630 and was the founder of the Maratha Empire. His bravery, strategic thinking, sense of justice, and religious tolerance continue to inspire people today. This birth anniversary was started in Pune in 1870 by Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. Later, in 1895, Bal Gangadhar Tilak popularized it on a large scale.

Processions, cultural programs, and historical tableaux are held in Maharashtra on this day. This is why government offices and banks are closed on this day.

Will digital banking be operational?

If bank branches are closed, there’s no need to worry. UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, and ATM services are available 24 hours a day. You can easily perform online transfers, bill payments, balance checks, or cash withdrawals. In today’s digital age, most essential banking services can be performed from the comfort of your home.

When else will banks be closed in February 2026?

Some holidays in February have already passed, while others are still remaining. Here is a list of upcoming bank holidays.

  • February 19th is a holiday in Maharashtra due to Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.
  • Banks will be closed on February 20th in Aizawl (Mizoram) and Imphal (Manipur) due to State Day.
  • February 22nd is a Sunday holiday.
  • Banks will be closed nationwide on February 28th due to the fourth Saturday.

In addition, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month and all Sundays.

What to do before going to the bank?

People often go to the bank without knowing about holidays and waste time. Therefore, it is best to check the official RBI website or your bank’s information beforehand. If you are in Maharashtra, postpone your branch visit today. If you are in another state, banks are open as usual.
