When is Mahavir Jayanti celebrated?
Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir Swami, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. It is the most important festival of the Jain community and is celebrated with reverence and devotion throughout India. Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated every year on the Trayodashi date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, which usually falls between March-April. In the year 2025, this festival will be celebrated on 10 April.
Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Mahavir, who was born about 2,599 years ago (599 BC) at a place called Kundalpur in Vaishali district of Bihar. He preached principles like non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy and aparigraha (non-possessiveness) and took Jainism forward in an organized manner.
Lord Mahavir renounced his royal life and took sanyaas at the age of 30 and after doing rigorous penance for 12 years, he attained Kaivalya Gyan (omniscience). After this, he showed the path of life to millions of people through his teachings.
