Bank license cancelled: Big news is emerging from Karnataka’s banking sector. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued its final verdict against Shimsha Sahakara Bank Niyamitha, located in Maddur, Mandya district. After a lengthy legal battle, the bank’s license has been completely revoked. Let’s understand the entire incident in simple terms.
First, let’s understand what the matter is.
This dispute is quite old. The RBI issued an order on July 5, 2024, revoking the bank’s license. At that time, the bank was directed to immediately cease banking operations. However, the bank challenged this order in the Karnataka High Court.
High Court Intervention and Stay Order
Hearing the petition filed by the bank (Writ Petition No. 19767 of 2024), the High Court issued an interim order on July 25, 2024. This order temporarily halted RBI action. Consequently, the restrictions imposed on the bank were periodically extended, the last extension being until May 24, 2026.
Dismissal of Petition and License Cancellation
The biggest turning point in this case came on February 17, 2026. The Honorable Karnataka High Court dismissed the writ petition filed by the bank as withdrawn. As soon as this petition was dismissed, the RBI’s previous order of July 5, 2024, came back to life and took effect immediately.

What will the bank no longer be able to do?
With the cancellation of its license, Shimsha Sahakara Bank has been subjected to several restrictions under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
Banking Ban: The bank can no longer accept or withdraw deposits.
Sections 5(b) and 56: The bank will no longer be able to use the term “banking” or carry out any financial transactions.
Immediate Effect: This order comes into effect immediately, meaning the bank’s doors are now closed to customers.
What’s Next for Customers?
Whenever a bank’s license is cancelled, customers are the most concerned. Now, the bank’s assets will be audited and a liquidator may be appointed. The process for depositors to receive their money will be in accordance with DICGC (Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation) regulations, where deposits up to ₹5 lakh are considered safe.
Conclusion
This action against Shimsha Sahakara Bank has been taken to maintain discipline in the banking sector. After a lengthy court process, the rules have finally prevailed. While this is a major setback for local customers in Maddur and Mandya, such a tough stance by the RBI is considered necessary for safe banking.
