RBI has directed all banks to adopt ‘.bank.in’ domain to make digital banking secure. This step has been taken to prevent online fraud, increase customer confidence and strengthen cyber security. All banks will implement it by 31 October 2025.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken an important decision to make digital banking more secure and reliable. Now all banks will shift their net banking service to the ‘.bank.in’ domain. This means that you will soon see the bank’s website on ‘.bank.in’ instead of ‘.com’ or ‘.in’. Banks are required to implement this change by 31 October 2025.
On 7 February 2025, RBI announced this plan, in which it was told that the digital identity and security of the entire finance sector will be strengthened through domains like ‘bank.in’ and later ‘fin.in’.
The technical process of the domain will be handled by IDRBT
The technical process of this domain will be handled by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Research i.e. IDRBT, which has been approved by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Banks can contact sahyog@idrbt.ac.in to start this process. If you use online banking, then know that this change is going to happen in the website address in the coming time and always login from the ‘bank.in’ domain only, so that you are safe.
Why did RBI bring this new domain?
RBI was very worried about the increasing incidents of digital fraud and phishing attacks in recent times. The main objective behind introducing the ‘.bank.in’ domain is to strengthen cyber security in the finance sector, help customers identify genuine banking websites, provide protection against fake websites, phishing and spoofing attacks and increase the general public’s trust in digital banking.
What will change for banking customers?
When opening a bank’s website, you will see .bank.in instead of .com or .in. Green security lock and SSL certificate will also be standard on the browser. Any genuine bank’s website will be available only on .bank.in, which will help you identify whether you are on the right site or not.
