BNP issues statement

According to a statement issued by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6 am at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She had been undergoing treatment there for more than a month. Party leaders and supporters expressed deep sorrow over her death and remembered her as a prominent political figure who played a significant role in Bangladesh’s modern political history. “We pray for the peace of her soul and request everyone to pray for her soul to rest in peace,” the party said.

She was battling multiple illnesses.

Khaleda Zia was admitted to a private hospital on November 23rd after suffering from serious heart and lung problems. According to Bangladeshi media reports, she also suffered from pneumonia in her final weeks. She remained under medical observation for 36 days and was described as critical. Over the past few years, the former Prime Minister had been battling several chronic illnesses, including liver cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis, and chronic kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems.

Her treatment was being overseen by a multidisciplinary medical team, which included Bangladeshi experts as well as doctors from the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and Australia. This month, there were discussions about sending her abroad for better medical care. However, those plans were ultimately shelved after doctors determined that her physical condition was too weak for international travel.
