Aadhaar is one of the most crucial identity verification document which helps an individual with myriad official tasks getting a bank account opened to get a new SIM card. It is therefore important to safeguard the 12-digit identification and prevent its misuse.
The government has various security measures in place to prevent pranksters and criminals from misusing Aadhaar. After facing criticism from hactivists, the UIDAI has introduced measures to secure the data of Aadhaar users and provide control to user to protect it. Here’s a list of such features to help you strengthen the security of your Aadhaar card.
By locking, users can lock their 12-digit Aadhar number instead use the 16-digit Virtual Identification (VID) whenever they need the same for authentication. It is to be noted that one the Aadhaar number is locked, a user cannot use the same for any kind of authentication by using UID, UID Token & ANCS Token for Biometric, Demographic & OTP Based authentication.
However, once the UID is locked, it can be unlocked from the resident portal. Once the UID is unlocked, the user can authenticate using UID, UID Token & ANCS Token for Biometric, Demographic and OTP Based Transaction. Authentication with VID can also be done.
How to lock, unlock biometrics in Aadhaar
Biometric Locking/Unlocking is a service that allows an Aadhaar holder to lock and temporarily unlock their biometrics. This facility aims to strengthen the privacy and confidentiality of user’s biometrics data.
Fingerprint and iris data in resident’s Aadhaar used for authentication can be locked using this. Locked Biometrics ensures the Aadhaar holder will not be able to use their Biometrics (fingerprints/iris) for authentication.
After locking biometrics if a UID is used for invoking any of the Authentication services using a biometric modality (Fingerprint/Iris) a specific error code ‘330’ indicating biometrics are locked.
Once resident enables Biometric Locking system their biometric remains locked till the Aadhaar holder choses to: unlock it (which is temporary) or disable the locking system. Please note that the registered mobile number is essential to avail this service.
