The Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh governments have declared the Aadhaar card invalid as a birth certificate. The government states that the date of birth recorded on the Aadhaar card is not based on any certified document. Therefore, the Aadhaar card will no longer be valid for government purposes such as appointments and promotions. To prevent the circulation of fraudulent certificates, the Maharashtra government has ordered the cancellation of birth and death certificates issued using the Aadhaar card.
Birth Certificate: The Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh governments have taken a significant decision, issuing an order stating that the Aadhaar card will no longer be valid as a birth certificate.
An order has also been issued in this regard. The order states that the date of birth recorded on the Aadhaar card is not based on any certified document, and therefore, cannot be accepted as an official certificate.
UP Government Issues Order
Citing a letter from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Special Secretary of the Planning Department, Amit Singh Bansal, stated that the Aadhaar card does not have any certified document attached to it for the date of birth, and therefore, it cannot be considered valid as a birth certificate.
The government has issued strict instructions that Aadhaar should not be considered proof of date of birth in any government process, including appointments, promotions, service register amendments, or other sensitive documents. Other original documents, such as a birth certificate, high school marksheet, or a certificate issued by a municipal body or health department, can be used for this purpose. It is noteworthy that Aadhaar is not considered proof of citizenship, meaning it is not used in citizenship-related documents.
Birth and death certificates issued using Aadhaar cards will be canceled in Maharashtra
Meanwhile, the state government has taken a similar decision regarding Aadhaar cards in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday ordered immediate action against birth and death certificates issued solely based on Aadhaar cards across the state.
Bawankule stated that the government will not tolerate fake certificates. Any birth or death certificate issued solely based on Aadhaar cards found to be suspicious should be immediately canceled and a police complaint should be filed.
This move comes amid concerns about certificates being issued using forged documents. It has been stated that all birth and death certificates issued by Naib Tehsildars after the August 11, 2023, amendment will be cancelled. It has been clarified that certificates issued solely on the basis of Aadhaar cards will be considered defective, as this document cannot be accepted as proof of birth or place of birth under central guidelines.
