Board Exams Rules Change: CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has issued a strict directive for class 10th and 12th students. According to this directive, students will be required to have at least 75% attendance to appear for the board examination in the 2025–26 session. This order has been given through a circular issued on August 4. CBSE has taken this decision because the attendance rules were not being followed by some schools and students. The board has clearly stated that it will not relax the discipline in any way. The purpose of this step is to curb “dummy students” and strengthen academic discipline.

Why will a student be barred from the exam due to low attendance?

According to CBSE’s examination rules (Rule 13 and 14), if a student’s attendance is less than 75%, he will not be able to appear in the board exam. However, exemptions may be granted under certain circumstances – such as serious illness, death in the family or participation in national/international sports competitions – but such exemption will be granted only if all the proof and required documents are submitted on time.

What is the responsibility of the school and parents?

CBSE has asked schools to inform students and parents about attendance rules at the beginning of the session. If a student’s attendance is low, the school is required to give a written warning to the parents through registered post or email. A certificate from a recognized doctor is required for medical leave and relevant documents for other circumstances.

When and how will attendance be calculated?

CBSE has said that attendance will be calculated till January 1. After this, the cases of students who have less attendance will have to be sent to CBSE by January 7. After this, no case will be accepted. And if any school later says that the student has completed 75% attendance, then CBSE will not accept it.

Will there be strictness on schools as well?

CBSE has said that it can conduct surprise inspections in schools at any time. If any discrepancy or manipulation is found in the attendance records, the recognition of the school can be cancelled and students can be deprived of the examination. All records should be updated daily and signed by the teacher and the principal.
