Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will be operational by 2029. The first high-speed rail corridor, between Surat and Bilimora, is expected to open by 2027.
New Delhi. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Saturday that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will be operational by 2029. A 50-kilometer section of India’s first high-speed rail corridor between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat is expected to open by 2027. Union Minister Vaishnav inspected the under-construction Surat station, including track laying and the first turnout. According to the Union Minister, the bullet train will cover the distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in two hours and seven minutes, compared to the nine hours shown on Google Maps.
The Union Minister stated that the overall progress of the first bullet train project has been very good. The first 50-kilometer section between Surat and Bilimora will be operational by 2027. By 2028, the Thane-Ahmedabad section will be operational, and the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad line will be open by 2029. Union Minister Vaishnav emphasized the use of modern technology to ensure safety, including vibration absorption systems along the tracks and special safety features to combat high winds and earthquakes.
The Union Minister stated that construction at Surat station has been completed, and track laying, finishing, and utility work are underway. The first turnout has been installed using advanced technology such as roller bearings and composite sleepers. The main line is designed to operate at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour, while the loop line will operate at 80 kilometers per hour.
Services are designed to run every half an hour during morning and evening peak hours. The Union Minister had previously stated that once the entire network is stabilized, trains will run every 10 minutes during peak hours. The project is expected to link the economies of major cities along the corridor and boost regional development, similar to the development seen after Japan’s high-speed rail. The 508-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is India’s first bullet train project.
