Canada Student Visa Rules: Students studying in Canada are getting an email from the Canadian government, in which they are being asked for their marks and attendance details. Indian students have become very nervous after receiving this email and they are calling the agents in India who had arranged for them to study in Canada. The ‘Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’ (IRCC) of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has asked for study permit and education records from the students in the email.

These emails are being sought by IRCC at a time when most of the students’ student visas are valid for more than two years. In fact, the government has started an initiative under which ‘Designated Learning Institutions’ (DLIs) and students are expected to follow strict immigration rules. The government is checking whether immigration laws and study rules are being followed by DLIs and students. DLIs are institutions where foreign students study.

What did the students say?

Talking to the Indian Express, a student who received the email said, “These emails are like formal inquiries, in which students have to tell with evidence that they are following the academic and immigration rules to study in Canada. If someone is not answering correctly or is not presenting sufficient evidence, it means that he is not following the rules. If this happens, the study permit of the students can be canceled and they can be sent back to their country.”

Another student said, “We are concerned because these stricter measures mean increased pressure to comply with academic and immigration rules. Many of us now feel that if we accidentally or intentionally skip classes or change DLIs and then do not report this to IRCC, our future in Canada could be at risk.”

Another student studying in Canada said, “However, we are being advised not to panic. Even though we have changed DLIs without informing the government, we should still not worry. This is because we have to prove that we are pursuing our studies in the new institute and our academic record is also good.” Currently, students are being advised to respond to emails immediately.

To whom is Canada sending emails?

According to education consultants, usually those students are getting emails who have changed their college or course without informing IRCC. In Canada, changing DLIs is allowed, but it is also necessary to inform IRCC about it. Emails are being sent to students whose academic performance is not good, attendance is low, who have failed in exams, have been expelled from college or have dropped out of college.

Education Tirath Singh from Jalandhar said, “Earlier some Canadian education agents have taken advantage of the relaxed rules for changing DLIs. Students doing so do not need to take classes daily and are able to focus more on work. There are some colleges which also promote such work. However, Canada has now tightened the rules. It has become necessary to obtain a new study permit on changing college. This step has been taken so that the study permit cannot be misused and students can really give priority to their studies.”
