According to Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Delhi airport is going to cancel 114 daily flights from June 15 to September 15.
Cancelled Flights: Some flights have been canceled at Delhi International Airport for the next one month. According to Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Delhi Airport is going to cancel 114 daily flights from June 15 to September 15. The refund of the tickets of all the flights that will be canceled will be sent by the airlines.
Videh Kumar said that flights will be canceled to upgrade the runway at Delhi Airport. This work was earlier delayed due to concerns of congestion. Now the Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be developed according to CAT III standards, which will ensure safe landing in low visibility conditions that usually occur during winter fog.
1450 flights are operated every day
This upgrade is important to maintain operational efficiency during the challenging winter months. Because we often see that flights are often affected due to fog. Indira Gandhi International Airport, India’s largest and busiest, handles around 1,450 flights daily. There are plans to upgrade runway RW 10/28, which will affect 200 flights over three months, of which 114 will be cancelled and 86 will be operated on a reduced schedule.
Expected to be completed by November 27
The runway will reopen in mid-September, but the ILS upgrade work is expected to be completed by November 27, just before the winter season. This deadline ensures that the airport is fully prepared to deal with the challenges posed by winter weather conditions. In a press conference on Friday, Jaipuriaar said that Delhi Airport has 1,450 aircraft movements per day. Of these, 114 daily movements will be canceled during the runway upgrade.
Jaipuria said that passengers will face inconvenience in the short term, but there will definitely be benefits in the long run. The upgrade is expected to improve flight operations during dense fog, which often causes considerable delays. By increasing the runway capabilities, DIAL aims to reduce disruptions and maintain a high standard of service for passengers.
Now flights will not be cancelled in winters
The runway closure will reduce the airport’s arrival capacity from 42 flights per hour to 32, affecting major routes like Mumbai and Patna. This strategic decision has been taken during the low travel season to prevent travel disruptions during festivals. A climate mitigation plan is also being prepared to deal with extreme weather conditions, the report of which is expected by the end of the year.
The current upgrade includes making the runway CAT III-B compliant, an advanced system that allows landing in extremely low visibility. This strategic overhaul aims to enhance winter operations, reducing delays during foggy months. All schedule changes have been coordinated with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to ensure minimal disruption to passengers. By upgrading to CAT III-B, the airport is significantly enhancing its ability to handle adverse weather conditions, improving overall safety and efficiency.
