CBSE New Rules: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to implement two new rules under the new education policy to make the entire education system digital, more systematic, and transparent. Under these rules, registration for board exams will no longer be possible without an APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) ID, and board exams for Math, Science, and Social Science will be conducted at two levels. The board has taken this decision to create a systematic, digital, and student-friendly education system for students and schools.

APAAR ID for Board Exam Registration

The APAAR ID will serve as a digital identity card for students’ entire educational journey. It will contain each student’s complete educational data, or academic record. The CBSE Board has stated that starting from the 2026-27 academic session, students from grades 9 to 12 will be required to provide their APAAR ID when registering and when filling out the list of candidates. Registrations for students without an APAAR ID will not be accepted. The latest review also pointed out that by the academic session 2025-26, not even 50% of the students would have Apaar ID.

Status of Apaar IDs in States

Data released by the Board shows that in West Bengal, 10% of students in grades 9 and 18% of students in grades 11 do not have Apaar IDs. Haryana fares slightly better in this regard. Approximately 54% of students in grades 9 and 11 in this state have registered IDs. The Board has directed affiliated schools to work together and improve their registration numbers before implementing the rules.

States like Gujarat and Bihar also have low percentages. In Gujarat, 27.59% of grade 9 and 19.94% of grade 11 students have IDs. In Bihar, 23.59% of grade 9 and 26.01% of grade 11 students have Apaar IDs. CBSE has stated that special support will be provided to schools in states experiencing difficulties to ensure better results next year.

These changes will occur in Class 10 from 2028

The CBSE Board will conduct Class 10 board examinations at two levels for subjects such as Math, Science, and Social Science from 2028. From the 2026-27 academic year, Class 9 students will study subjects at two levels: Standard and Advanced.
