The CBSE is developing a new roadmap to reduce dependence on coaching. A CBSE committee has recommended establishing Centers for Advanced Studies in schools to prepare for engineering and medical entrance exams.
CBSE New Rules: Expert committees within the Ministry of Education are continuously brainstorming to address the growing reliance on coaching and the undermining of school education. A high-level committee within the Ministry has highlighted the need to adopt the Professor of Practice model in schools. Meanwhile, a CBSE expert committee has recommended establishing Centers for Advanced Studies (CAS) in schools to provide guidance to students preparing for engineering, medical, and other major entrance exams.
CAS will be located on school campuses
Existing CBSE-affiliated schools may be permitted to start advanced studies. The Advanced Studies Center will be located on the school campus, and classes will be held during school hours. Enrollment in CAS will be voluntary. Students will have the freedom to opt out of CAS and resume their regular schooling in standard classes. Schools may collaborate with faculty from institutions of higher education and national repute for specialized input. There will be no agreement with coaching institutes for CAS.
Two levels for each subject, like Maths
- Just as CBSE has created two levels for Maths in grades 10 and 12, curriculum standards should be established for many other subjects.
- It should be up to the student to choose the Advanced Curriculum or another option.
- Subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Legal Studies, Accounts, and Economics should be taught and entrance preparation should be conducted at the Advanced Center.
- The Committee has clarified that there will be no discrimination against students who do not opt for CAS and attend other “standard” classes.
In other words, after the board’s approval, schools will have an Advanced Center, where, in addition to regular school studies, specialized preparation for entrance tests can also be provided. Because the CBSE has decided to continue the formula of 50 percent competency-based questions in board exams, the introduction of CAS will ensure that other classes will also be taught with competency in mind.
Center for Advanced Studies teachers will be separate!
The CBSE committee has noted that students aiming for admission to the country’s prestigious universities and colleges spend a significant amount of time preparing for entrance tests in coaching institutes. A culture of dummy schools is also emerging, which the CBSE has tightened its grip on. Schools will be able to enroll students in Centers for Advanced Studies who wish to prepare for major national entrance exams. However, for this-
Schools will not be allowed to start franchise or dummy schools.
- Schools will be required to hire separate teachers for the center or appoint their own trained teachers.
- Students and their parents will be counseled first, and then students will be selected for the center through a transparent process.
- Preparation for entrance exams including NEET, IIT JEE, CLAT, CUET, and others will be provided at the center.
Professor of Practice
- The Ministry of Education’s High-Level Committee has recommended that schools should initiate professional development programs. This has two key aspects:
- First, school teachers will be educated on competitive exam strategies, enabling them to better prepare students in school.
- Second, domain experts from the education and industry can be invited as visiting faculty under the Professor of Practice model to share their experiences with students. This will provide students preparing for competitive exams with a valuable opportunity to understand entrance exam strategies.
CBSE Board to Prepare Study Material
The Board of Education will develop specialized teaching resources for subjects taught at advanced levels and competitive exams. These resources can also be made available digitally. Regular assignments and corresponding handouts can be prepared and distributed to students. Teachers can design module-based assignment booklets for each subject.
