Cheap Electricity Bill: A new and significant initiative is underway for electricity consumers in Delhi. Residents in the capital will now be able to buy and sell electricity generated from solar panels installed in their homes or buildings. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has approved a pilot project to implement this system. This pilot will be implemented for six months.

This new system is being called “peer-to-peer energy trading.” Simply put, consumers who have solar panels and generate excess electricity will now be able to sell that excess electricity directly to other consumers. Those who require more electricity will be able to purchase this electricity from other consumers.

This pilot scheme, approved by the DERC, will be launched on a limited scale. Its purpose is to assess the effectiveness of this model of buying and selling electricity between consumers and the benefits it provides to the general public. According to officials, technical, legal, and practical aspects will also be assessed during this period.

Electricity will be affordable

This scheme is expected to reduce electricity bills, provide additional income opportunities for households with solar panels. Consumers purchasing electricity will receive cheaper electricity, which will also benefit the environment, as solar energy is pollution-free.

The Delhi government has already taken several concrete steps to promote solar energy. A net metering system is already in place in the capital, under which consumers can send excess electricity to the grid. Now, peer-to-peer trading will simplify and streamline this process. This initiative is also in line with the central government’s renewable energy policy and green energy goals.

Transparency and competition will increase in the energy sector.

If this pilot project is successful, it could be implemented on a larger scale in the future. This could revolutionize the way electricity is produced, distributed, and consumed in Delhi. Experts believe that this initiative will not only empower consumers but also increase transparency and competition in the energy sector. Overall, this new system being implemented in Delhi is considered an important step towards providing affordable, clean, and reliable electricity to the general public.
