Cyclone Alert: It is likely to form into a depression over southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by October 25, into a deep depression by October 26, and into a depression over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 27
Cyclone Alert: A low pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which could intensify into a cyclonic storm on October 27. Due to this, a heavy rain warning has been issued for parts of Odisha and West Bengal for three days starting next Monday. Bhubaneswar Meteorological Department Director Manorama Mohanty said that the weather system has moved west-northwestward in the last three hours and is likely to continue moving in the same direction.
Mohanty told reporters, “It will intensify into a depression over the southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by October 25, a deep depression by October 26, and a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 27.” When asked whether the system would make landfall on the Odisha coast, he said, “It’s too early to say anything, but wherever it lands, Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from October 27 to 29. Coastal districts are expected to be the worst affected.”
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for light to moderate rainfall in 12 districts on Friday, 21 districts each on Saturday and Sunday, and the entire state on Monday. Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the state government is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to face any eventuality. Pujari said, “October is generally considered a cyclone month. There is no need to panic. The government is fully prepared to handle the situation.”
Meteorological officials said the system is also expected to bring heavy rain to districts in South Bengal, including North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, and Howrah, between October 28 and 30. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in Kolkata and the adjoining Hooghly district on October 28. They said heavy rain is also expected in North Bengal’s Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts between October 29 and 30.
