Cyclone Fengal: Heavy rain in many districts of Tamil Nadu, roads submerged in Chennai; International airport closed

Cyclone Fengal The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has deployed three disaster relief teams in Chennai and 13 teams in other districts affected by cyclone Fengal. The cyclone will cross the Tamil Nadu coast by Saturday evening. A total of 2229 relief centres have been set up in Tamil Nadu. So far, 471 people from 164 families have been sent to relief camps in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

Cyclone Fengal will cross the coast of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near Puducherry today i.e. on November 30 evening at a speed of 70-80 kmph. Meanwhile, heavy rains continue in most parts of Tamil Nadu.

Due to bad weather, Chennai International Airport has been temporarily closed till 7 pm on Saturday. On the other hand, Indigo Airlines has diverted all flights coming to Chennai. Due to heavy rains, holiday has been declared in schools in nine districts of Tamil Nadu. Fishermen have been advised not to go to the sea.

Security increased on beaches

The administration has also increased security on the Puducherry coast. Puducherry Senior Superintendent of Police Kalaivanan visited the beaches and coastal roads in the area. In Tamil Nadu, people have been advised not to go to beaches including Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam and Edward Elliot Beach in Chennai.

Tourist places in Puducherry have been closed as a precautionary measure due to cyclone Fengal. 300 police personnel have been deployed in coastal areas in Puducherry. According to the IMD, moderate rain occurred in Puducherry on Saturday morning. Heavy rain and strong winds continue in Marakkanam of Viluppuram, Tamil Nadu. Trees have been uprooted in Besant Nagar area of ​​Chennai.

Roads submerged in Chennai

Roads have been submerged due to heavy rains in Chennai. People are struggling with waterlogging in many areas. There is ankle-deep waterlogging in New Washermanpet, Gemini Flyover and Mount Road areas. Due to the storm, the weather has changed due to rain and strong winds in the coastal areas. Chennai recorded continuous heavy to moderate rains from Friday night to this morning. According to the IMD, Cyclone ‘Fengal’ in the southwest of the Bay of Bengal first moved west-northwestwards and is expected to cross the coasts of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry by this evening.

Red alert issued in many areas

The IMD said that the Meteorological Department is continuously monitoring cyclone Fengal through satellite observations along with Chennai, Sriharikota and Chennai Doppler weather radars. According to the IMD, the cyclone will hit the coastal areas of northern Tamil Nadu this evening and a red alert has been issued in various parts of southern states including the coast of southern Andhra Pradesh.
