Deepfake New Law: In view of the growing threat of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Deepfake technology, the Danish government has prepared to bring strict laws to curb it. This law will declare fake audio-video created using someone’s voice or image without permission a punishable offense. Denmark is going to be the first country in the world to do so, which is expected to curb the misuse of this technology.

What is Deepfake?

Deepfake is an advanced technology, in which fake video or audio is created by imitating a person’s voice or face with the help of AI and machine learning. It is edited in such a way that it looks real, whereas in reality it is completely fake. The word Deepfake is made up of ‘Deep learning’ and ‘Fake’.

How does Deepfake technology work?

Deepfake technology mainly works on two algorithms – Encoder and Decoder.

Encoder: It analyzes the pictures and videos of the real person and learns the pattern of gestures and voice.

Decoder: It mixes the learned information with another video or audio in such a way that the fake clip looks exactly like the real one.

The danger is increasing due to Deepfake

Many serious dangers have emerged due to the misuse of Deepfake technology:

Political lies: The public can be misled by fake videos of leaders in elections.

Social blackmailing: People can be defamed by making fake pornographic videos.

Fake news: Riots can be instigated through fake videos.

Cybercrime: It can also be used in identity theft and banking fraud.

What is Denmark’s new law?

Under the law proposed by the Danish government:

  • Creating Deepfake content using someone’s voice or image without permission will be considered a crime.
  • Strict punishment will be given for spreading Deepfake video or audio.
  • Social media companies will be required to remove such content.

Measures to prevent Deepfake

-Do not share any sensational video without investigation.

-Confirm the source of the video.

-Use tools like Google Reverse Image Search.

-Report suspicious content on social media.

Concern at global level too

Not only Denmark, countries like America, India and European Union are also worried about Deepfake technology. It is now being considered an issue related to national security. International organizations have demanded a global framework so that every country can implement strict laws against Deepfake at its own level.
