Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announces Rs 5000 for autorickshaw, taxi drivers; free ration for card holders

All autorickshaw drivers and taxi drivers in Delhi will be given Rs 5000 each by the Delhi government, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announced on Tuesday.

New Delhi: All autorickshaw drivers and taxi drivers in Delhi will be given Rs 5000 each by the Delhi govt so that they get a little help during this financial crisis, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Tuesday. He also announced free ration to all ration card holders in Delhi for two months.

“All autorickshaw drivers and taxi drivers in Delhi will be given Rs 5000 each by the Delhi government so that they get a little help during this financial crisis,” Kejriwal said. With these announcements, over 1,56,000 autorickshaw drivers are expected to get a benefit from the scheme. The free-ration scheme is expected to help over 72 lakh people in the national capital.




Lockdown will not be needed, hopes Kejriwal
Kejriwal, however, said that the decision does not mean that the restrictions imposed in the national capital will last for two months. He further hoped that the situation in Delhi will improve and a lockdown will not be needed’. The national capital is under lockdown till May 10 due to a steep rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. On Monday, Delhi recorded the highest single-day rise in the number of COVID-19 deaths.

In its daily COVID-19 bulletin, the Health Department said that Delhi recorded 8,043 new coronavirus cases and 448 deaths in the last 24 hours. Currently, the active number of cases in Delhi stands at 89,592. The cumulative caseload in Delhi is 12,12,989, including 11,05,983 recoveries and 17,414 deaths.

Kejriwal had, on Monday held a review tweeting with Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and officials of the Health Department. He had emphasised that the home-quarantine system in the city needed to be strengthened so as to make sure that beds in hospitals are available for the needy and the critical.
