Delhi Vehicle Ban: Starting today, November 1, 2025, commercial vehicles with BS4 (Bharat Stage-4) engines will be completely banned from entering Delhi. The Delhi Transport Department issued this order, effective today, following the directives of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to control pollution in the capital. This decision was taken in light of Delhi’s continuously deteriorating air quality. Only commercial vehicles with BS6-compliant engines will be allowed entry into Delhi. Light, medium, and heavy goods vehicles will remain banned if they run on BS4 engines.

This is also being seen as an opportunity for companies to upgrade their vehicles to BS6 standards. Experts say this step is essential to clean Delhi’s toxic air and should be strictly followed.

Which vehicles will be exempt?

According to the CAQM notification, only BS4 vehicles registered in Delhi will be allowed to ply in Delhi. Additionally, CNG, LNG, and electric commercial vehicles will be allowed to ply without restrictions. Because these vehicles emit very little smoke, they have been given priority. This restriction will not apply to private vehicles, taxis, and cab services like Ola and Uber.

What is the BS4 standard?

The BS4 engine is a pollution control standard set by the Government of India, implemented on April 1, 2020. Under this standard, vehicle engines and fuel are designed to significantly reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and carbon monoxide (CO). This reduces air pollution and improves engine efficiency.

How is monitoring being done in the capital?

According to the Delhi Transport Department, RFID scanning systems have been installed at all border points to prevent the entry of BS4 vehicles into the capital. The Transport Department has warned that violations will face permit cancellation and a fine of up to ₹20,000. The Transport Department has appealed to the public to cooperate in this campaign to reduce pollution.
