Property registration: Delhi residents will be required to show their water bills at the time of property registration. In a major decision, the Delhi Jal Board has approved a proposal to make it mandatory to show water bills at the time of property registration. This means that water bills will now be considered a mandatory document at the time of property registration. This move is aimed at increasing revenue and preventing illegal water connections in Delhi.
Board officials stated that Delhi currently has 5.7 million electricity connections. Compared to this, water connections are significantly lower, with only 2.9 million water connections in Delhi. This raises suspicion that many households in the national capital lack valid water connections. The proposal has now been approved at a meeting of the Delhi Jal Board chaired by Pravesh Verma.
The Water Minister stated that water is a basic necessity, but the Delhi Jal Board incurs a cost of ₹101 to purify 1,000 liters of water. Therefore, they want the water bill for the last three months to be included with property registrations at the Sub-Registrar’s office. The aim is to strengthen the water and sewerage network so that the Yamuna River in Delhi can be cleaned within the next three years.
A senior Delhi Jal Board official stated that feedback on the proposal is being sought from the Revenue Department before proceeding with this decision. This decision will ensure that water bills have been paid at the time of sale or purchase of a property. It will also determine whether the connection is proper. This decision will have widespread impact, especially in illegal colonies. Just as electricity bills are considered as proof of property registration, water bills can also be included.
