Tamil Nadu News: Over time, people’s lifestyles have changed significantly. Previously, only dogs and cats were kept as pets, but now this range has expanded significantly. Today, people are also keeping various animals, such as rats, flying squirrels, chameleons, snakes, and frogs. In addition, many breeds of dogs are also being kept in homes.

However, some dog breeds are quite aggressive, posing a threat to the safety of children and the elderly. On the other hand, the number of stray dogs on the streets is also continuously increasing, causing problems for the general public.

The Situation of Pet and Stray Dogs in Chennai

The increasing number of pet and stray dogs in Chennai is causing daily problems for school-going children and morning and evening walkers. This has led to a growing demand for dog control. Following this, the Chennai Municipal Corporation initiated the process of licensing pet dogs.

So far, 57,602 pet dogs have been licensed through special camps. According to the 2024 census, there are approximately 180,000 stray dogs in the Chennai Municipal Corporation area. Microchipping and rabies vaccinations have been underway since June to monitor them.

Licenses and Vaccinations Mandatory

The Municipal Corporation has issued clear instructions to pet dog owners to obtain licenses, rabies vaccinations, and microchipping for their dogs. Failure to comply will result in strict action.

The Municipal Council also passed a resolution that a fine of ₹5,000 will be imposed on unlicensed pet dogs. Special camps were also organized in several phases to achieve this. The license deadline for pet dogs was extended four times, but now the deadline has expired.

Door-to-door inspections begin today

According to data on the Municipal Corporation’s veterinary department website, 98,023 pet dogs remain unlicensed. To take action against these, the Municipal Corporation has decided to begin door-to-door inspections zone-wise starting today.

A special team has been formed in each zone, consisting of three members, including a veterinary doctor. This team will identify unlicensed pet dogs and impose fines on those violating the rules. The Municipal Corporation says that this step is necessary for the safety of the people and to maintain order in the city.
