New Delhi. 85,000 visas have been revoked in the US since the Trump administration tightened immigration rules. The US State Department posted on X that 85,000 visas have been revoked since January, reflecting the Trump administration’s increasing strictness on immigration enforcement and border security.

Indeed, the US State Department wrote in a post that 85,000 visas have been revoked since January, including more than 8,000 students, which is more than double the number from last year. This message demonstrated the administration’s continued commitment to strict immigration monitoring. This indicates that President Trump and Secretary Rubio are not going to stop with these rules.

Make America Safe Again

The post by the US State Department included a photo of President Donald Trump with the caption “Make America Safe Again,” further reinforcing the administration’s argument that strict visa regulations are essential to national security efforts.

A senior official stated that more than 8,000 of the revoked visas belonged to students. Crimes such as drunk driving, theft, and assault were cited as the main reasons for the cancellations, accounting for nearly half of last year’s cancellations.

Criminals and Terror Supporters Targeted

Some visas were also revoked due to visa expiration, investigations related to support for terrorism, and other serious reasons. In October, the administration also revoked the visas of individuals accused of celebrating the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

While these categories accounted for a significant portion of the cancellations, the official did not provide further details about the remaining visas revoked in 2025. During President Donald Trump’s second term, the State Department has expanded its criteria for reviewing visa applications and monitoring visa holders. The Trump administration further tightened the rules following the terrorist attack near the White House.

The impact of America’s new social media rules on Indians

The Trump administration’s strict social media screening rules have caused significant disruption for H-1B visa applicants in India, with many appointments postponed to next year. The US Embassy in India issued an advisory on Tuesday night stating that many interviews scheduled for December-January have now been rescheduled for March 2026 or later. Applicants have been instructed to make all social media profiles “public” before December 15th, or their visas may be rejected. Those who arrive at the embassy on the old date will be denied entry.
