Driving licenses cancelled: The government is taking a major step to crack down on traffic violators. The central government is preparing to implement a grade-based driving license system, under which points will be deducted for traffic violations and repeat offenders could face license suspension or even cancellation.
Driving licenses cancelled: Every year, millions of road accidents occur in the country solely due to negligence. Speeding, driving while talking on the mobile phone, driving under the influence of alcohol, or running a red light… these seemingly minor mistakes change the lives of thousands of families forever. Now, the government is taking a major step to curb such reckless drivers. A ‘graded points system’ may soon be implemented in driving licenses, under which repeat offenders could face suspension or even cancellation of their license.
What is the graded points system?
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has indicated that the government will implement a points-based system in driving licenses. Under this system, each license will have a fixed number of points. Any violation of traffic rules will result in a certain number of points being deducted from their license. Serious violations, such as speeding, reckless driving, jumping signals, driving in the wrong direction, or driving under the influence, can result in higher points being deducted. If all points are exhausted, the license can be suspended for six months. Repeated violations can also result in the license being revoked.
Why was this step necessary?
Around 500,000 road accidents occur in India every year, resulting in approximately 1.8 lakh deaths. The vast majority of these are among young people between the ages of 18 and 45. Not wearing helmets and seat belts, overspeeding, and mobile phone use are the main causes. The government has already increased traffic fines, but simply increasing them has not proven sufficient. The biggest challenge is ensuring strict compliance. In such a situation, a points-based system can motivate people to drive responsibly.
Relief for Accident Victims
The government is emphasizing road safety as well as providing immediate assistance to accident victims. Under the Prime Minister’s Relief Scheme, road accident victims will be provided cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh within seven days from the date of the accident. The Minister urged people not to hesitate in helping accident victims. Transporting the injured to the hospital has now been made easier and safer, without worrying about legal hassles or expenses.
Responsible Driving Is the Real Solution
The government maintains that road safety will come not simply from enacting stricter laws, but from people becoming more aware and responsible. The new graded points system serves as a clear warning to those who repeatedly violate traffic rules. Repeated violations will now result in a direct loss of license. Therefore, driving safely and cautiously is the easiest way to protect your own life and the lives of others.
