Duty Free Jewellery Import Limit increased: The government on Sunday increased the duty-free limit for travelers bringing imported goods into India to ₹75,000. This change applies to residents of Indian origin and tourists arriving by air or sea. The new limit came into effect at midnight on February 2. The new rules replace baggage regulations that have been in place for nearly a decade.
What is the limit for jewelry?
For Indian residents or tourists of Indian origin who have been abroad for more than a year, a separate limit has been set for jewelry. Upon returning to India, a female traveler can bring up to 40 grams of jewelry without paying duty.
For travelers other than women, the duty-free jewelry limit will be 20 grams, provided it is part of bonafide baggage (personal use items).
The definition of jewelry is also clear.
Under this rule, jewelry means decorative items commonly worn by a person, made of gold, silver, platinum, or other precious metals, whether or not set with precious stones (rubies). The Baggage Rules, 2026, aim to update customs allowances in line with current travel and consumption patterns.
What is the ₹75,000 limit?
Under the Baggage Rules, 2026, any Indian citizen or tourist of Indian origin arriving in India, not by land, will be able to bring goods worth up to ₹75,000 without paying customs duty. These goods must be in the person’s possession or included in the passenger’s carry-on baggage. Previously, the duty-free limit was ₹50,000, which will now be ₹75,000.
The government has also revised the allowance for tourists of foreign origin. Foreign tourists visiting India, who are not children, can now bring in luggage worth up to ₹25,000 duty-free. Under the Baggage Rules, 2016, this limit was ₹15,000.
