The e-passport is not just a document; it is an important step towards fully digitizing passport services. This facility will be available at all passport offices in the near future. Meanwhile, citizens who currently have paper passports can continue using them.
e-Passport: In a major step towards modernizing and securing travel documents in India, the Ministry of External Affairs has launched the e-Passport facility. Initially piloted in April 2024, this scheme is now gradually being rolled out to passport service centers across the country. It will be formally implemented nationwide from June 2025.
What is an e-Passport?
An e-Passport looks exactly like a traditional Indian passport, but with added modern technology. It has an RFID chip and antenna embedded in its cover, which securely stores the holder’s biometric data, such as fingerprints and a digital photograph. This makes counterfeiting virtually impossible. A distinctive golden mark below the word “Passport” on the cover allows for easy identification. Most importantly, this passport complies with international ICAO standards, ensuring global recognition.
Where is it available?
Initially, this facility was available only at passport service centers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Ranchi, and Delhi. However, under the Passport Seva Program 2.0, it is now being rolled out across the country. While it may not be available at all centers simultaneously, citizens can apply. Those with a valid regular passport do not need to replace it immediately.
Who can apply?
The eligibility criteria for an e-passport are the same as for a regular passport. Any Indian citizen can apply. The required documents are also the same: proof of identity, proof of address, and proof of date of birth. Additionally, biometric verification at a Passport Seva Kendra (Passport Service Center) is mandatory.
Application Process
- Register/log in to the Passport Seva Portal.
- Fill out the online application form and select your nearest Passport Seva Kendra.
- Pay the prescribed fee online and book your appointment.
- Visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date with the required documents.
- After verification and biometric capture, your e-passport will be issued.
What are the benefits?
According to the government, e-passports will offer several benefits to travelers.
Security: Altering or forging the data stored on the chip will be extremely difficult.
Faster processing: Immigration procedures at airports will be faster, especially in countries with automated e-gates.
International recognition: India’s passport will comply with global standards.
Identity protection: The combination of electronic and biometric features will help protect citizens from identity theft.
