If you’re planning to purchase an electric scooter or e-rickshaw, the central government has provided significant relief. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has extended the subsidy deadline under the PM E-Drive scheme. Subsidies on electric two-wheelers can now be availed until July 31, 2026. The subsidy deadline for e-rickshaw and e-cart purchases has been extended to March 31, 2028. This government move is aimed at further accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, encouraging more people to switch from petrol and diesel to e-vehicles.

What the figures say
According to government figures, a total budget of ₹1,772 crore was allocated for electric two-wheelers under the PM e-Drive scheme. Of this, approximately ₹1,259.91 crore has been spent as subsidies so far. The government has also made significant changes to its targets this time. The previous target was to subsidize only 1.4 million electric two-wheelers, but this has now been increased to 2.48 million units. Nearly 1 million electric scooters and bikes have been sold so far.
E-rickshaw and e-cart sales decline
On the other hand, companies have performed better than expected in the case of large electric three-wheelers. Sales in this category were targeted at 159,862 units, but in reality, only 162,981 vehicles have been sold, significantly exceeding the target. However, the picture is slightly different for e-rickshaws and e-carts. Not even 10% of the target has been achieved in this category. In light of this, the government has reduced the funding allocation for e-rickshaws from ₹192 crore to just ₹50 crore.
The government’s full focus on this segment
Overall, the government’s focus is now on the electric two-wheeler segment, which is generating the most volume. According to the Gazette notification, the sales target for e-rickshaws and e-carts has also been slightly increased to 39,034 units. The extension of the subsidy deadline will not only provide consumers with cheaper vehicles, but will also give companies more time to clear their stock and launch new models.
