Whether you’ve purchased a new home or inherited a property, the previous owner’s name often remains on the electricity bill. Changing this was previously a cumbersome task, but technology has now made it incredibly simple. Whether in Ghaziabad or anywhere else in the country, you can now transfer your electricity connection to your name from your mobile or computer without any hassle.

Changing your name has become easier in the digital era.

Almost all electricity boards in the country, including the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), have now made their services online. The biggest advantage of this is that you don’t need to stand in long lines or deal with middlemen. Simply upload a few essential documents and you’re done.

Keep these important files ready

Before starting the process, keep scanned copies (PDF or photo) of some documents in your phone:

For identification: Aadhaar, PAN card or your Voter ID card.

House documents: Copy of the registry, allotment letter or sale deed, which proves that the property is now in your name.

History: The most recent electricity bill paid.

Special Case: If the previous owner has passed away, proof of heirship or NOC from other members may be required.

How to apply online?

First, visit your state’s electricity department website (e.g., UPPCL Online for Uttar Pradesh). Log in with your Consumer ID. If this is your first visit, register a new one. Then, go to the ‘Services’ section and select the ‘Name Change’ or ‘Ownership Change’ option.

Fill in the digital form with your correct information and upload the required documents. A small fee (approximately ₹200-500) will be required to be paid online for this process. Upon submitting the form, you will receive a ‘request number’, which you can use to track the status of your application.

How much time will it take?

After applying online, department officials verify your documents. If everything is found to be correct, the process is completed within 7 to 15 days, and your new name will appear on your next month’s bill. If you’re not comfortable working online, you can also complete the process the old-fashioned way by visiting your nearest electricity office (SDO office) and filling out Form A
