UP News: In Uttar Pradesh, Energy Minister A.K. Sharma of the Yogi government expressed concern regarding issues associated with smart meters and directed officials to adopt a concrete and effective strategy to resolve them. In UP, electricity supply will not be disconnected during the night or on holidays if the balance on prepaid meters runs out. He emphasized that there should be no misconceptions or confusion among consumers regarding smart meters. To this end, a large-scale public awareness campaign should be launched so that consumers can fully understand the benefits, utility, and operational mechanism of smart meters.

Reviewing the preparations for uninterrupted power supply during the upcoming summer season at the capital’s Sangam Auditorium, Energy Minister A.K. Sharma stated that consumers should be regularly sensitized to maintain a sufficient balance in their smart meters. They must be notified in a timely manner before their balance runs out. If a consumer’s balance expires during the night, their electricity connection shall not be disconnected during those hours. Similarly, no consumer’s connection is to be disconnected on holidays. He directed that separate counters be established for the prompt and effective resolution of complaints related to smart meters, ensuring that consumers’ issues are resolved expeditiously. The grievance redressal mechanism should be further strengthened and made more accountable.

Ensure Continuous Monitoring and Accountability at the Field Level
During the meeting, special emphasis was placed on expediting capacity-enhancement works on a priority basis to further strengthen the power supply infrastructure. Minister A.K. Sharma stated that transformers, feeders, and other technical systems must be reinforced in a timely manner to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, even amidst the surging demand during the summer season. He also issued directives to ensure continuous monitoring at the field level, establish accountability, and secure the active participation of officials. UPPCL Chairman Ashish Goel, Managing Director Pankaj Kumar, along with the Managing Directors of all DISCOMs and other officials, were present at the meeting.
